Note on the contrast between Western Pharmaceuticals and Chinese Herbal Medicine:
We recognize that there is an important place in modern healthcare for both Western pharmaceuticals and herbal remedies. In some situations, Western pharmaceutical treatment may be a preferred method of treatment. There is also a growing body of research which indicates that traditional uses of plant remedies and the known pharmacological activity of plant constituents often coincide. However, Chinese medicinal medicine is distinct from medicine based on pharmaceutical drugs in several major ways:
· Chinese medicinals are natural and are more gentle and subtle than Western pharmaceuticals. Because of the many components in Chinese medicinal materials, herbal medicine is more naturally balanced than medicine based on isolated active ingredients (such as the isolated salicylic acid from willow bark, initially marketed as ‘aspirin’). Therefore, herbal medicine is far less likely to cause serious and irreversible side-effects.
· Because herbal medicines are typically formulated for the individual patient, there is no “one size fits all” methodology as there is in Western pharmaceutical prescription. For example, four people with the western diagnosis of “migraine” visiting the same Western physician would likely (but not always) receive the same prescription for the current most-favored migraine pharmaceutical. In contrast, from a Chinese herbalist, each patient would receive a unique medicinal recommendation using components particularly formulated based on that patient’s particular signs and symptoms. This is because Chinese medicine recognizes and incorporates into its system of healing the truth that no two headaches are exactly alike, and no two persons are exactly alike.
· Because Chinese medicinals are typically prescribed in combination, different components of a formula balance each other and create a mutual synergy which both increases efficacy and enhances safety.
· Chinese Medicine seeks primarily to correct internal imbalances rather than to treat symptoms alone, and therapeutic intervention with Chinese Medicine is designed to encourage a patient’s self-healing process. Western pharmaceuticals are often prone to mask symptoms, without addressing the underlying disharmony of the body, mind or spirit. This failure to address the underlying disharmony may lead to a worsening of the condition of the patient, without true healing.
· Chinese Medicinals have been used on billions of people and documented for thousands of years. Unlike with too many Western drugs, there will never be a “recall” of a properly recommended Chinese medicinal formulation. Because of the deep recorded and successful history of these medicinals, you can have confidence that it will not be discovered that the medicine you have been taking has newly been found to cause cancer, heart disease, or other serious problems.
